Chapter 027 – Ordinary Heroes

Gu Xingyi opened the file folder, and the first thing that caught his eye was a bold title:

"Ordinary Heroes"

The moment he saw those words, his expression turned serious as he continued reading.

    "Heroes are ordinary, yet extraordinary.
    They don’t possess divine powers,
But they accomplish things even gods cannot.

    In this chaotic world,
There are no deities descending from the heavens,
Only mortals willing to step forward.

It is these silent, unsung heroes who protect our land,
Passing down the torch generation after generation.

In Hua Nation, a great and vast country,
There is no shortage of such heroes—
It’s just that few know their names.

HuaYin, in cooperation with various ministries,
Now invites all major entertainment companies
To submit a theme song for selection—
    A tribute to ordinary heroes,
    To promote our cultural values
And foster a new social atmosphere.”

The office was silent, broken only by the soft rustling of paper as Gu Xingyi flipped through the documents.

His expression had never been this serious since arriving in this world.

Following the text were several photographs.

The first showed a group of doctors and nurses in protective suits, slumped in exhaustion outside an operating room, still in uniform, under the dim light of night.

The second featured three firefighters, covered in grime and ash, standing in front of a recently extinguished fire. The firefighter in front wore a bright smile, holding a swaddled infant safely in his arms.

The third was of several soldiers, only their backs visible. Written on their uniforms in bold were the words "Narcotics Unit". Ahead of them stood a group of heavily armed criminals.

The fourth was a collapsing classroom. Two teachers were shielding and guiding children to the door, and one teacher was handing a child to someone outside. Behind her—nothing. She was the last one out.

...

There were many more like this.

Gu Xingyi studied each photo carefully, his fingers gently brushing over them. His heart trembled slightly.

This… this was the soul of Hua Nation.

He suddenly felt that, even if Yin Hai Entertainment didn’t agree to his terms, he would still write this song.

It would be an honor. No concern for profit, no need for reward.

Because the people in these photos—
They deserved it.

When he finished reading, he carefully gathered the documents, took a deep breath, and neatly stacked them.

Yang Chenglin broke the silence just then.

“Pretty powerful stuff, huh? Honestly, if I had the ability, I’d write a song for them even if I had to pay out of pocket. But I don’t. Even a massive company like Yin Hai hasn’t produced anything satisfactory.”

“So, how about it? Can you do it? You’ve got only three days—three days until HuaYin closes submissions.”

Gu Xingyi nodded.

“As a Hua Nation citizen, how could I not be moved? Don’t worry. Leave it to me. I’ll give you—and them—a satisfactory answer within three days.”

With that, he packed up the folder and stood.

“Alright, then. Just get me some manuscript paper. I’ll work on it at the hotel.”

“Got it. I’ll walk you out.”

Yang Chenglin didn’t waste any time either. She knew how hard it was to write a good song in just three days.

Time was tight. She said no more and quickly stood up to escort him downstairs.

That evening, in the hotel.

After showering, Gu Xingyi sat at the desk. He laid out the manuscript paper and silently picked up his pen.

After reading through the materials, two songs had surfaced in his mind.

Both fit the theme perfectly:
"Nobodies" and "Only Ordinary".

He thought long and hard before finally deciding—

Only Ordinary.”

It was the theme song of Dying to Survive in his original world, later adopted by CCTV as a theme during the anti-pandemic period. It perfectly embodied this campaign’s spirit.

Ordinary heroes—unknown and uncelebrated. No divine halo, just quiet strength.

The melody was simple, but in that simplicity lay subtle sorrow that gradually transformed into hope and conviction.

Gu Xingyi began writing the music.

As the notes spilled onto the page, his mind drifted back to the early days of the pandemic in his original world.

Though people were trapped at home, they held on to faith—faith that they would overcome it all.

He thought of Academician Zhong. Of countless nameless heroes who ran toward danger when others fled.

Like that quote:
“This world may be broken, but someone will always be there to patch it up. No one is born a hero, but someone must carry the weight and move forward.”

That—was the essence of ordinary heroes.

Once the sheet music was complete, Gu Xingyi rubbed his tired eyes and took out another piece of paper. He solemnly wrote down the song’s title.

After putting everything together, he softly hummed the melody.

He wouldn’t allow a single mistake in this song. He hummed it several times, making sure every part was perfect, before finally lying on the bed, satisfied.

He couldn’t help but look forward to their reaction tomorrow.

The next morning, after a quick breakfast, Gu Xingyi didn’t inform Yang Chenglin. Instead, he took a cab to Yin Hai Entertainment on his own.

When he showed up at her office, she was in the middle of work and looked shocked to see him.

“You have time to visit me? You only have three days, you know! Dage, shouldn’t you be writing right now?!”

“Write what? It’s done.”

Gu Xingyi smiled and handed her the manuscript, watching her face fill with disbelief.

“You finished overnight?”

A composed onee-san like Yang Chenglin actually looked flustered.

She couldn’t believe it. Just one night?

What kind of quality could a song written in one night even have?

Frowning, she took the papers from him. Just yesterday she’d thought he was mature and capable. Now it felt like he was playing her for a fool.

Fine. She’d see for herself.

At first, her face remained calm as her eyes landed on the title. But as she read on—line by line—her expression changed completely.

These lyrics…

They sang of ordinary people, yet every line breathed heroism.

It didn’t say “hero” once, but every sentence was about heroes.

It hit the theme squarely.

She eagerly moved on to the music score. A few moments later, she looked up at Gu Xingyi with shining eyes.

“You… you really wrote this overnight?”

Gu Xingyi scratched his nose and answered calmly, “What else? I stayed up all night for this.”

“So? Think it’s good enough?”

He asked again, though he already knew the answer—if this wasn’t good enough, then nothing was.

Yang Chenglin’s eyes lit up even more as she stared at him.

“You’re incredible! I was right to bet on you!”

“Can you sing it for me? I want to hear how it sounds when performed!”
