Chapter 009 – Shopping

In the side bedroom.

Gu Xingyi lay on the bed and picked up his phone, which he’d set to silent, wanting to check how the video had done.

The moment he unlocked it, he was stunned.

Holy crap!

How many notifications is that?!

His phone’s notification panel was filled with alerts—likes, shares, and comments—all maxed out at “99+”.

His hands trembled slightly as he cleared the flood of alerts. He had expected the song might do well, but he hadn’t imagined it would blow up like this.

This was insane.

Good thing he’d set it to silent last night—otherwise, just the constant pings might’ve kept him up all night.

Gu Xingyi swallowed and opened Douyin, heading straight to his profile.

The number of followers—over a million—nearly blinded him. Even someone used to shocks like him couldn’t help but gape.

You had to understand—this world’s Douyin platform wasn’t as mature as the one in his previous world. Even in that well-developed version, there were very few people who gained over a million followers overnight.

With excitement building, Gu Xingyi tapped into the video—over 2 million likes and close to a million comments. A smile spread uncontrollably across his face.

One song to fame!

It seemed that no one else in this world had achieved such a feat.

And looking through the comment section, it was nothing but praise. Everyone was asking him to post more songs of this caliber.

Turns out, a good song really is timeless and spaceless.

Luckily, it was still early and not good to eat too much for breakfast.

After washing the dishes, Gu Xingyi grabbed his phone and rushed out the door.

He currently lived in an old residential complex in Jiangcheng’s old town district.

The neighborhood was visibly run-down. The reason they’d bought a place here back then was because it was cheap. He and Xia Xiyao hadn’t been working for long when they got married, and neither of them had much money.

When they tied the knot, they’d dreamed of upgrading to a better home in the future. But in the two years after, the previous Gu Xingyi never got another job—and blew through all their savings.

He even sold Xia Xiyao’s phone for alcohol. All the household finances were controlled by him.

Leaving the shabby complex, he merged into the flow of pedestrians and headed straight to the mall he remembered.

The mall wasn’t far—just two blocks away. It was called Lantian Mall. The name was tacky, but the place had everything.

This was actually Gu Xingyi’s first time there. As soon as he entered, he spotted a major domestic brand’s phone store.

Probably because most people were at work, the store was empty. A young female clerk was sitting at the counter, idly painting her nails.

Her eyes lit up when she saw Gu Xingyi walk in, and she quickly came over.

Seeing such a handsome guy first thing in the morning put her in a great mood.

“Looking for a phone, handsome?”

“Yeah.”

Gu Xingyi nodded and glanced over the phones on display, then pointed to a sky-blue model.

The clerk immediately picked it up, her smile widening.

“Great choice, handsome! This one’s our newest model—stylish design, 100x zoom, and it’s the first phone in the world to support satellite calls!”

Gu Xingyi nodded and thought for a second before asking, “Do you sell SIM cards here too?”

“Of course! Is it for yourself? If so, you can register right here. Recharge 100 yuan and you get 100 yuan in talk time, plus 200 minutes of free calls, 100 free texts, and 50GB of bonus data…”

The clerk launched into her pitch with even more enthusiasm, talking herself dry. She hadn’t expected the good-looking guy to not only buy a high-end phone but also get a SIM card.

That meant more commission for her—pure joy!

Gu Xingyi didn’t have the heart to interrupt her. He waited for her to finish before speaking.

“It’s not for me. I’m getting the SIM card for my wife.”

“Ah…”

The clerk froze for a second and looked at Gu Xingyi again, feeling oddly disappointed.

Sigh… such a young guy already tied to the graveyard of marriage?

Of course good men belong to someone else. He didn’t even blink buying a phone worth thousands—for his wife, no less.

Still, she said cheerfully, “Your wife is very lucky! I’m sure she’ll love this phone.”

“But for the SIM card, your wife will need to come in person with her ID to register.”

“I see. Then just pack up the phone for me.”

Gu Xingyi scratched his head. He hadn’t realized this world also required real-name registration for SIM cards. Oh well—he’d just have her package the phone for now.

A few minutes later, the phone was packed, payment was complete, and Gu Xingyi left the store under the clerk’s enthusiastic farewell.

He still had a lot to buy—he’d already spent more time than expected here.

He stayed busy until 10:30 a.m., and by the time he finished, he was riding home on one of the mall’s delivery trucks, his arms full of shopping bags, grinning from ear to ear.

Sure enough, this is the life of someone with money—buy, buy, buy!

And it felt… amazing!
